Key Appointments Announced

The MCU Administration has announced the appointment of Ms. Leliosa N. Olmilla as Principal of the High and Grade School Department and Dr. Visitacion G. Fernandez as Head of Grade School.

Ms. Olmilla has more than 18 years of teaching experience in High and Grade School including over 11 years in MCU. The new HGS principal is a candidate for a Master of Arts in Child Study degree at the Philippine Normal University and finished a Bachelor of Science in Education degree Major in General Science and Minor in Mathematics at Far Eastern University.

Dr. Fernandez has over thirty-five (35) years of academic and administrative work experience in MCU. She started her academic stint in MCU as an elementary teacher, taught in various Colleges, and is currently a professor at the Graduate School. In 2005 until her new appointment, Dr. Fernandez was the Principal’s Coordinator of the MCU High and Grade School Department. Dr. Fernandez has a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts in Education, and Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education degree cum laude in MCU.

In a related development, the Administration also announced the appointment of Dr. Marciana Aliping – McKenzie as Dean of the College of Dentistry effective June 15, 2010.

Dr. McKenzie has more than 25 years of experience as a dental practitioner in Metro Manila and London. She has a Doctor in Dental Materials Science degree at Guy’s Hospital in London, a Master in Science in Paedodontics degree at King’s College Hospital in London, and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at De Ocampo Memorial College. Dr. McKenzie finished her pre-dental course at the College of Arts and Sciences in MCU.

The Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) announced the top-performing nursing schools for 2009. These schools rated higher than 40.70% national passing average set by the PRC and the school's number of exam takers in the recent results of the NLE.

Greetings!

This year anniversary celebration of our institution and homecoming activity is a very special one because we are commemorating the 105^th year foundation of our beloved Manila Central University. This year’s theme is “Unity in overcoming challenges” and today’s activity is the culmination of the year-round anniversary celebration program.

Tonight’s homecoming activity and recognition of our alumni is of equal importance for our institution. Because you, our graduates, are the source of inspiration, pride and encouragement for us to continue the mission in providing quality education to the youth in order develop a well-rounded professionals with desirable traits. Your success only proves that our effort was not in vain. CCS Participated in the Open Jive Regional Challenge 2009 - Philippines

CCS team composed of Mr. Carlo De Guzman, Mr. Jeremiah Adriano, Mr. Adrian Puerto together with their coach Ms. Marilou Nisperos became finalist in the Regional Open Jive Challenge held at the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP)last July 18, 2009. The event was organized by Sun Microsystems, the largest contributor of Open Source Technologies which provides students with a platform to identify, develop and apply information technology in a real world scenario. The challenge creates an opportunity for creative student developer to contribute to the Free and Open Source Economy. This will fuel a wave of excitement and collaborative energy, powering these communities toward greater innovation, participation and growth.

MCU-CCS Academic Partnership with the Industry

True to its commitment of providing quality education, Manila Central University-College of Computer Studies has recently leveled up its curriculum to be at par with the most advanced colleges and universities, not just locally, but internationally as well, in terms of providing the latest technology and advances to its faculty and students.

In a contract signing held last November 3, 2008, Manila Central University, partnered with Fasttrack Solutions, Inc., in adapting the SAP Business One Academic Program to enhance its programs of studies in Computer Studies, Accountancy, Business Management, and Engineering.

As a result of the increasing implementation of Business Solutions Software to promote industry growth and efficiency world-wide, the requirements for industry-relevant skills has grown significantly over the last few years. Hence, the need to address this concern urged for the development of SAP skills amongst students.

The partnership between opens a greater opportunity for students to learn the highly-acclaimed and well-recognized Business Solutions in the industry, making certain that they become ready and fit to the demands of their future workplaces.

In a kick-off meeting held last October 2008 at MCU College of Computer Studies, to formally launch the implementation, Fasttrack conducted its Train the Trainer Program to lead faculty members who will teach the subjects incorporating SAP Business One. This Faculty training was designed to deliver SAP Business One fundamentals, navigation and system architecture, business processes inside an ERP system, custom configuration and reporting tools, as well as project implementation and management.

“This partnership of FastTrack and Manila Central University is a big step in empowering the students – bringing in a world-class software solution,” declared by Mr. Kerwin Malabanan, FastTrack Managing Director.

According to Ms. Melen D. Bones, FastTrack Training Administrator, “The SAP Business One Solution we are introducing to the Manila Central University students is the same system we implement to our clients in various industries. For this reason, the students won’t have a problem adapting to the system of their future employers.”

“Rest assured that we will continue to provide our service in bringing well-recognized value on the students’ cost of education by providing industry-relevant skills through SAP Business One. “ says Ms. Rexie Andal, Senior Sales Consultant for Training and Education, Fasttrack “And to see that Manila Central University has embraced this timely undertaking is commendable.”

Test Taking Strategies

Examinations are a fact of life in college. But the only time an exam should be trial is when you aren't prepared for it, and the best sign that you aren't prepared is when you have to stay up all night to "cram". Cramming won't do very much for you (except make you so tired that when you take the exam you won't be able to think clearly enough to answer the questions you DO know).

Here are some tips to help you develop test taking skills:

Before the Test

Start preparing for you exams the first day of class. You can do this by reading your syllabus carefully to find out when your exams will be, how many there will be, and how much they are weighted into your grade.
Plan reviews as part of your regularly weekly study schedule; consequently, you review over the whole quarter rather than just at exam time.
Reviews are much more than reading and rereading all assignments. You need to read over your lecture notes and ask yourself questions on the material you don't know well. (If your notes are relatively complete and well organized, you may find that very little rereading of the textbook for detail is needed). You may want to create a study group for these reviews to reinforce your learning.
Review for several short periods rather than one long period. you will find that you retain information better and get less fatigued.
Turn the main points of each topic or heading into questions and check to see if the answers come to you quickly and correctly. Try to predict examination questions; then outline your answers.
It may seem "old-fashioned", but flashcards may be a helpful way to review in courses that have many unfamiliar terms. Review the card in random order using only those terms that you have difficulty remembering.

During the Test
There are also some things to keep in mind when you are TAKING the test.

First, read the directions carefully!! Many points have been lost because students didn't follow the directions.
Remember to preview the test to see how much time you need to allot for each section. If the test s all multiple choice questions, it is good to know that immediately.
Work on the "easiest" parts first. If your strength is essay questions, answer those first to get the maximum points. Pace yourself to allow time for the more difficult parts.
Find out if you are penalized for incorrect responses. (This is probably covered in the directions. If not, make educated guesses. If there is a penalty, avoid guessing.
When answering essay questions,s try to make an outline in the margin before you being writing. Organization, clear thinking, and good writing is important, but so is neatness. Organization, clear thinking, and good writing is important, but so is neatness. Be sure to make your writing legible.
Save time at the end of the exam to review your test and make sure you haven't left out any answers or parts of answers. This is difficult to do under the stress of exams, but it often keep you from making needless errors.

After the Test
If the instructor reviews the exam in class, make sure you attend. Many students choose to skip class of the day of the review because "nothing is happening" that day. On the contrary, this is an important class to attend because it helps reinforce the information one more time in long term memory. even if you aren't interested in the "learning" aspect of the class, it is an opportunity to hear what the instructor was looking for in the answers. This can help you on the NEXT exam.

MCU - College of Computer Studies Celebrates its 5th year Founding Anniversary

As part of the celebration on the 5th founding anniversary of the MCU-College of Computer Studies, the MCUAA-CCS Chapter will hold its first ever Alumni Homecoming/Get-Together on September 12, 2009 (Saturday) from 6:00pm to 11:pm at the MCU Centennial Gym.

Objectives of the said event:
1. celebrate the 5th foundation anniversary of the College of Computer Studies and will be repeated every five years;
2. visit our Alma Mater and see the changes and improvements it has made through the years;
3. reminisce with our friends, former classmates, batchmates, and teachers about all the wonderful times MCU gave us;
4. have a general assembly by means of the homecoming wherein all alumni can talk about how to give back to our Alma Mater;
5. promote camaraderie and bridge communication between the alumni and future alumni; and

MCU FDT Learning Resource Center... The New Hub of Future Leaders

MCU FDT Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a state-of the-art structure strategically designed to give the best amenities of a modern learning facility, with the primary objective of enhancing the academic performance of every MCU student and achieve excellence in their respective pursuits.

This structure is not a stand alone library, but rather a hub of synergized learning resources combined into one (1). Though the dominant spaces were allocated for the University and Medical Library with a total functional area of 8,879 sqm., and is intended for a sophisticated Reserve, Circulation, Reference, Periodical, Technical and Filipiniana Sections, this modern hub also contains the same services for Elementary and High School Library and a complete array of support educational amenities, tailor made for in-depth and serious learning.

Its student-to-table and student-to-carrel ratios are considered one of the best ratios ever established in a learning institution. The huge On-line Public Access Catalog (OPAC) was designed to give the students the best comfort for an easy, fast and precise access to the much needed textbooks / references at any given time using the vast capacity of MCU information highway.

New MCU President Appointed

The Manila Central University (MCU) Board of Trustees announces the appointment of Aristotle T. Malabanan, PhD as the fourth president of MCU effective January 1, 2009. Dr. Malabanan served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and Vice President for Academic Affairs prior to his appointment as President and Chief Operating Officer.

He finished his doctoral studies in Education, Major in Educational Leadership and Management at De La Salle University and received a gold medal and recognition for graduating with high distinction on October 2008. He completed a Masters in Management program at the Asian Institute of Management in 1990 and finished a Doctor in Optometry course in MCU in 1979.

He graduated High School at San Beda College in 1975 and Grade School also in San Beda in 1971. Dr. Malabanan built a career in the academe and was involved in MCU’s academic and administrative efforts for nearly thirty years.Since completing his college degree, he got immersed in work experience that will hone his knowledge and skills in managing the educational institution. He firmly believes education is a key to society’s progress and lasting peace.

Dr. Malabanan’s appointment as the fourth president of MCU in 2009 coincides with the institution’s 105th anniversary. After marking its centennial anniversary in 2004, the MCU administration saw an opportunity to undergo an organizational review to set its sight on the coming years and beyond.

Specific programs were built and implemented in research and development, faculty development, enrolment, curriculum review, and a high ranking and firm board performance for its Colleges, among others.

Dr. Malabanan’s academic and management prowess, together with his genuine concern for the development of the institution and all its stakeholders is what MCU needs to face the challenges ahead.

The new management thrust and the MCU 105th anniversary theme “Unity in Overcoming the Challenges” is the boost that the institution needs to further its rich history and track record of success.

The sleepless nights spent in studying and the completion of requirements is over, but this is not where the journey ends” Katrina Marie Soto said during the 2006 MCU Commencement Exercises held at the Philippine International Convention Center last Saturday April 8.

Soto, a Bachelor of Science major in Biology cum laude graduate, petitioned for the conferment of the respective titles and degrees to 830 students who have completed their academic requirements during the solemn rites.

What we can offer in return is to be dedicated in the field we chose as future profession, to give a positive contribution to our community and to take part in nation-building.

In a well-appreciated portion, Razon gave recognition to all those who prepared him for a bright future, specially his parents. “May I request my fellow graduates to stand up and face our parents and give them a round of applause.” Razon requested to the approval of everyone, especially the graduates.

MCUAA shifts to high gear

The Manila Central University Alumni Association (MCUAA) is all geared up towards positive changes and advancements.

In a meeting held last May 29 at its office, the MCUAA officers and board members deemed that it is high time that adjustments be made appropriate to the alumni and association needs and the times. During the meeting led by MCUAA President Ms. Maricon Y. Boie, various committees were formed and revived. Those heading the committees as chair are as follows.Dr. Dante Bornales, Committee on Consitution and By Laws; Dr. Lucita Aguilar, Ways and Means; and Dr. Cristina Garcia, Special Projects. The other committees are Membership headed by Ms. Crystal Jmee Hernandez, Finance by Ms. Paz Jeanne Arana and Publications by Dr. Angel Baloy.Among the initial steps is the review of the MCUAA Constitution and By Laws for possible amendments. Among the key amendments are the duties and responsibilities of each officer, membership fee and card, and standing committees.

The other priorities are preparations and pursuit of projects such as homecomings, fund-raisers and activities that will strengthen the ties of the alumni here and abroad. The MCUAA status at the Securities and Exchange Commission will also be confirmed and the office will be spruced up.

Dean Boie is top pharmaceutical educator

Over a thousand licensed pharmacists from all over the Philippines attended the 58th Philippine Pharmacists Association (PPhA)National Convention last April 9 to 12 at the Astoria regency Convention Center in Pasonanca, Zamboanga City.

This year’s theme “Strengthening Pharmacists’ Core Values, Enhancing Client Service” and the festive cultural atmosphere provided positive influence on the delegates. Numerous speakers gave key insights and updates on industry and other related matters.

The awards and fellowship night highlighted the 4-day convention. The PPhA awarded various honors to deserving pharmacists in the different pharmacy fields of practice. Among them as Ms. Maricon Y. Boie, RPh, MSPh, Dean of the College of Pharmacy who received the “Most Outstanding Pharmaceutical Educator Award”.

Ms. Boie was acknowledged for her dedication to the profession by deed and heart. She has inspired man individuals by her unique way of teaching and influence in and out of the classroom.

The College of Pharmacy head is described as a workaholic but jolly Dean, a shoulder to lean on, a source of advice, a trend-setter, a walking thesaurus, a person of initiative and accomplishments, a mother to her faculty, and a great mentor to her students.

TOWARDS A STRONGER ALUMNI FOUNDATION

In line with the organization of the MCUAA, the new batch of officer came up with a concurrence to form working committees, each with specific task to handle and make efficient the delivery of services to its member-alumni.

The move is being implemented to effectively address concerns of the members of the different chapters particularly those that encounter difficulties in organizing their respective chapters.

Included in the programs are the formulations of a Directory Database, webmail, fund-raising projects such as a talent-variety show with faculty and alumni participation, a bazaar slated on December, faculty development seminars in coordination with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs, the conduct of Little Ms. MCUAA which will be held every two years, publication of its own newsletter, and recognition for golden and silver jubilarians.

Also included are the holding of Young Achievers to intensify efforts to strenghthen community medical and outreach projects, a resolution to increase alumni fee establish representation in msjor University, programs and activities like commencement exercises, Christmas party a new ID system for all alumni-members and officers, initiatives to assist the University in its recruitment campaign.

The move signals a call to all alumni-members to extend their unwavering loyalty and support to the organization in order to achieve its objectives. Part of the plans includes a move to strenghthen chapters with concerns involving representation and those that have college deans and chapter officers who are not alumni of MCU.

An alumni bulletin board will be set-up for announments and information concerning forthcoming projects and activities. An alumni database is being formulated to constitute a reference and profiling all alumni members.

With everything in place, the new officers are optimistics that the organizations will hurdle the difficulties it will face in its quest to attain its objectives for the general welfare of its members.

Guidance fest bats for stronger family ties

The Guidance and Testing Center held its annual Guidance Fest with the theme "Strengthening Family Ties" last January 25 and 26. The event emphasized the importance of the family and recognized it as the primary support group of an individual. The theme is in response to the needs of students wherein maladjustments in life are a results of unhealthy family relationship.

The activities during the celebration were an on-the-spot poster making contest, job fair, career symposium and parenting seminar.

The on-the-spot poster making contest seeks to showcase the talents of students in terms of visual arts particularly in the medium of poster making, acknowledge the importance of having a happy family in relation to cultivation of the person as a whole and re-evaluate one's own family through self-reflection.

The contest was won by Eunice Partricio of the College of Nursing, second was Marcelo escaro of High School while third was Carlo Ongoco also od Nursing.

The winners received certificates and cash prizes. The judges were Mr. Jesselu Misa, University Registrar, Dr. Jose Mallari, Head of the Department of Laboratories and Clinics and Dr. Gemeliano Aligui, Research Director.

This year, the job fair drew 28 company participants. The fair provided graduating students employment opportunities, assisted the students with prospects in line with their chosen field, and prepare them for job search and placement.

The Guidance Fest's culminating activity was a parenting seminar entitled "Understanding Your Children" in the afternoon of January 26, 2008 at the Tanchoco Auditorium

Mrs. Erlinda Reyes of Center for Family Ministries as the resource speaker. She focused on the preventive approches to positive discipline, corrective measures and goals of misbehavior. The next half of the seminar was on punishment -its effects, four R's of punishment and consequence and what parents can do.

Preparations Ongoing for MCUMAA Homecoming

Its all systems go for the forth coming 46th Manila Central University Medical Alumni Association (MCUMAA) Post-Graduate Course and Alumni Homecoming. The affair will be held on December 12 to 14, 2008.

The organization with MCU College of Medicine Batch '83 Silver Jubilarians has chosen the theme "Living the Legacy. Pursuing Our Future" for the year's celebration, a fitting tribute to the institution's 61 years of dedicated services to the nation.

The 3-day affair will start with "Balik-Eskwela" on December 12 where the alumni will walk down memory lane as they tour the hospital and the College of Medicine. They will be meet with school administrators, former mentors employees and students during the testtimonial luncheon to be hosted by the administration.

The 2nd day is Family Day for the Silver Jubiliarns. This will be held at Highlands Country Club in Tagaytay City. It will be a day of fun, sports activities and pleasure for the special guests, many of whom will meet for the first time for over 25 years. This will also be an opportune time to renew friendship and rekindle camaraderie.

A Post-Graduate Course and Homecoming Night to be held on December 14 at the Discovery Suites in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, will cap the affair. On this day graduates from the different batches will join the Silver Jubilarians. Expected to grace the celebrations are GOlden Junilarians (Batch '58) who must be in their 70's by then.

The Organizing Committee has carefully chosen the topics for the scientific session to suit the interest of the alumni from all ages. They have invited local and foreign experts to discuss various key subject matters.

part of the session is the Filemon D. Tanchoco Memorial Lecture in honor of the school founder. This year's lecturer is Dr. Sergio Brillantes, past chairman of the Department of Surgery. He will discuss the History of Surgery in the Philippines.

The highlights of the celebrations is the Fellowhip Night where the alumni are expected to display their hidden talents. In line with the tradition of the institution, outstanding alumni will receive recognition awards during the Fellowship Night.

Leading the preparations are Dr. Lucita Pascual-Aguilar, President of MCUMAA, and Dr. Henry G. Falcotelo, Overall Chairman of the Organizing Committee.

MCU Graduates to Reap Global Opportunities

We need to put our acts together. The time is now," Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan. Executive Vice President said in his address during the University Convocation last June 19 at the Centennial Gymnasium.

Dr. Malabanan said this in reaction to a discussion paper that was presented during the recent World Economic Forum in Switzerland. The paper entitled "What in the world is going on?" discussed American and worldwide transformations and opportunities that are shaping political, economic and world events that will have implications on business, culture and the way of life.

"Given these possibilities and having maintained Manila Central University's niche ans competence in health science and other program offerings all these years, the graduates of all our academic programs, will be at the forefront of reaping all of these opportunities." Dr. Malabanan said.

The MCU Chief Operating Officer cited two factors in the study that presents opportunities to MCU students. These are the shift in demographics of Western civilizations and the restructuring of major businesses, and the that the Western world and other countries have significantly reduced birth rates.

Related to the shift in demographics and restructuring of business, Dr. Malabanan said, "More and more small to medium sized companies run by entreprenuers are supplying products and services to companies. This presents a lot more jobs and livelihood opportunities," he said.

"For young people like you, you need not be employed all your life. Opportunity has it that you need a modest capital to start your own business. If you have the skll and good at something,(then) you are in business," he added.

In this connection, he noted the sprouting of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) enterprises, more known as call centers, in the Philippines and related that the giant IBM has outsourced components such as computer ships, hard drives and monitors.

"Amid this development (of low birthrate in many countries), there are opportunities for products and services tailored to aging populations. There will be a demand for products and care for older people," Dr. Malabanan said.

"The world needs competent health care, business managers and IT professionals. The same kind that MCU has and will continue to produce,"he said.

MCU Cited Among Caloocan's Top Taxpayers

The Bureau of Internal Revenue- Caloocan Revenue District has recognized Manila Central University and the MCU FDT Medical Foundation as among the City's top corporate ta payers during an awards ceremony held at the Caloocan Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Fire Brigade Building last March 31.

MCU, known for its commitment to excellent in health education and medical services, has always adhered to good corporate citizenship.

The awards were received by Dr. Renato Tanchoco Jr, Assistant Vice President for Administrative Affairs for MCU and Mrs. Flor de Lis Malabanan, FDTMF Finance Director for the MCU- FDTMF. In his remarks Caloocan Revenue District Officer Nelson Traje expressed appreciation to MCU and the other companies who contirbute to the districts surpassing revenue collection targets.

MCU is Top Performing Dental School

The Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) has recognized the MCU College of Dentistry as the top performing dental school in the country for the year 2006.

The award was given last January 27 during the oath talking ceremonies of the new dentists held at the Manila Pavilion, Manila Hotel.

MCU has a total of 99 examinees, the fourth largest among schools that had dental students talking the liscensure examinations. Of the total MCU students who took the test, over 30% passed and are now licensed dentists.

Dean Elisa Puzon said that some MCU graduates have become public servants, as they chose to serve their fellow Filipinos as government or military dental health practitioners. She cited Dr. Leopoldo Deocaris, currently the Chief Dental Officer of the V.Luna Medical Center, who is also as a full colonel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines as among the outstanding MU College of Dentistry graduates. Dr. Deocaris was also recognized as the 2003 Most Outstanding AFP Dental Officer.
